Winfield Drivers Race Sunday

This Sunday, Sept. 24, the Cowley County Fairgrounds will be the site of some harem-scarem stock car races.  Nine big races will be run with some of the top drivers in this part of the country participating.  Of interest to the local fans is the fact that five Winfield men will be competing in the action.

Heading the list of Winfield drivers is Lou Steward, driving a '56 Ford (#10), now in his fourth year of competition.  Steward has been tabbed the man responsible for getting the other local drivers interested in stock car racing.

Darrell Hotchkin will be at the wheel of a '56 Ford (#21) also.  This is Hotchkin's first year of competitive racing.

Kenny Moore, a veteran of 81 Race Way in Wichita, will be driving a '56 Chevy (#88) sponsored by Phillips Auto Salvage.  Moore has been driving three years.

Bob Lawrence, driving a '55 Ford (#4), is in his second year of racing.

Wayne Wilt will be at the wheel of a '56 Ford (#24) sponsored by Kline Motors.

For an afternoon of fun and plenty of excitement, bring the family to the Stock Car Races Sunday, Sept. 24.  Races begin at 2:30 p.m.

The following list of officials and hoped for entrants, comprised of entrants in the July 23, 1967 who indicated they would return for this race and other drivers that organizers though might participate in this race, was on a page that was printed up and handed out free to race fans by V.F.W. volunteers at the stock car races in Winfield, Kansas on September 24, 1967 in lieu of a printed racing program.  This was not an entry list and, just because someone is listed below, it does not mean they actually participated in this racing program:

*Roger VanHorn started his Mercury on the inside of the second row of the heat race but dropped out after a few laps with an electrical problem.  The problem was corrected in time for VanHorn to compete in the B feature where he finished in third place and for which collected $12.57 in prize money.  This was the only time he ever raced at Winfield.

The photograph, on the handbill at left, was taken by a staff photographer for the Winfield Daily Courier and staged several days before the actual September, 1967 race date.  Shown in the third turn of the Winfield racetrack are cars driven by Lou Steward, left; Bob Lawrence, center; and Kenny Moore.  These handbills were printed by the Winfield Daily Courier and placed on car windshields and in store windows before race day.  One version also appeared as an ad in the Winfield Daily Courier accompanied by the article at the top of this page.

I know that Bud Haehn won the A feature on September 24, 1967 but I have not been able to locate a list of actual entries or more detailed results of the races on that date.  If you have either of these things, or photographs taken that day, please contact Bob Lawrence.

Gary Vogt of Hesston, Kansas driving the 1956 Ford #66, leads Darrell Hotchkin of Winfield in his #21 Ford, down the front straight-away during a race at Winfield on September 24, 1967.  Starter Al Alexander can be seen near the inside of the racetrack at the right edge of this photo.

Pinky Mullens started this race on the pole position in his 1957 Ford #02.  Bud Haehn started inside of the second row in John Rush's 1956 Chevrolet #11, Jack Johnson started inside of the third row in his own Ford #35 and Gordon Dodson started inside of the fourth row in his own 1957 Chevrolet #87 in this race at Winfield on September 24, 1967.

Bud Haehn of Wichita, Kansas won the A feature at Winfield, Kansas on this date driving this 1956 Chevrolet owned by John Rush who was also from Wichita.  Click your mouse on the photo to see an earlier photograph of this same car – Haehn family photos
