WINFIELD, KANS. - May 26 - The Auto Racing Association of Kansas, in conjunction with the Winfield branch of the V.F.W., held its first race of the ’68 season Sunday.  The field consisted of 45 cars from all over Kansas and Oklahoma.

The main event went to an Oklahoma speedster, Bill Collins.  He was challenged all the way by Gary Vogt of Hesston, Kansas but Gary just didn’t seem to be able to pass although Collins had several anxious moments.  The main event was marred by an accident just out of turn two.  Dewayne Anderson hit the guardrail, blocking part of the track.  Dennis Fox was just too close to miss him and both cars were total wrecks, but both drivers walked away.  This is a great credit to the fine safety equipment built into these cars by the boys.

Jack Petty won the trophy dash and first heat and was third in the A-feature.  Milton Ward took the second heat, but had a little bad luck and was unable to compete the rest of the day.  Vogt won the third heat with Collins a close second.

Bob Henshaw won the first race of his racing career after racing only four times in his life.  He appears to be one driver to watch.

The next race in Winfield will be held June 23 at the fairgrounds and will again be sponsored by the V.F.W. of Winfield.

LEFT:  The #15 Chevrolet stock car driven by DeWayne "Andy" Anderson, of Copan, Oklahoma was involved in a crash just out of the second turn during the A feature race.  After colliding with the guardrail, Anderson's car was struck by the #69 Ford driven by Dennis Fox, also pictured at left.  Note how a piece of the pipe guard railing crushed the roof of Anderson’s Chevrolet.  Repairs were made to his #15 in time to line up for the restart of the feature race.  Note that there is a photo below on this web page showing Anderson’s car crashing into the guard rail - R. B. Flynn collection

#19 Don Blackburn of Coffeyville, Kansas is shown here in his Chevy lined up next to #1A Bob Overton of Wichita, Kansas in his Ford.  Flagman Al Alexander can be seen walking on the other side of Overton’s Ford.  Race promoter Dale Chase is standing in front of Overton’s Ford.  Blackburn’s clutch was slipping and the car was fitted with the rear-end gear that he used on quarter-mile racetracks.  He did qualify for the A feature on this date but did not finish well – Montgomery family collection

Don Jones of Bartlesville, Oklahoma made it safely by in car #12 at left as #15 DeWayne Anderson crashed his Chevy into the steel pipe guard railing on the back straightaway at Winfield, Kansas.  You can see a photo of Anderson’s yellow #15 Chevy after it had been loaded onto a trailer by clicking your mouse on this photo.  The man walking in the foreground at left is Kenneth Bohannan.  Can you identify the other cars or their drivers in this photo?  If so, please contact Bob Lawrence at: sprintguy @ cox.net – Ron Cyr photo from the Irving L. Richardson collection

This photo was taken on the pace lap of the B feature.  Bob Henshaw of Wichita, Kansas can be seen in the red and white #17 in the pole position.  Hersel Wagoner of Wichita was driving the yellow #58 Ford on the outside of the front row.   Mel Montgomery of Wichita was in the red and white #05 Ford on the inside of the second row and Bob Overton of Wichita is following Mel in his blue and white #1A Ford.  That is Don Blackburn of Coffeyville, Kansas in his light green #19 Chevrolet to the outside of the third row; Wayne Wilt of Winfield was in the gray Ford #24 starting on the outside of the fifth row, and John Marshall of Wichita started on the outside of the last row in his blue Ford #41.  Can you identify any of the other drivers in these photographs?  If so, please contact Bob Lawrence at: sprintguy @ cox.net - Merlin L. "Slim" Reeves photo

None of the cars or drivers in this photo has been positively identified yet.  Anyone who can identify them is asked to contact Bob Lawrence at: sprintguy @ cox.net

Also, anyone having photographs, or any other information about the races run at Winfield on this date is likewise asked to contact Bob Lawrence - Merlin L. "Slim" Reeves photo

Race organizer Dale Chase is shown here at left presenting Bill Collins with his check for winning the A feature race on this date.  This appeared at the racetrack as #21 but two other cars with that number were already there so this car was renumbered “211” by race officials.  The man standing at right is Don Blackburn – Ron Cyr photo from the Spencer – Yarbrough V. F. W. post 3544 collection
