Jones was stationed at the Hutchinson Navel Air Station in Hutchinson.  His car became involved with two others on the south turn on the second lap and “flipped”.  He was not injured and crawled from the car through the front window.

Narber was the only driver involved in a three-car crash on the second lap, whose car was able to continue in the race.  He restarted in last place and was running in fourth place when a front spindle broke throwing his car into the south fence at the same spot where the earlier three-car crash had occurred.

As was his custom, Bolton “maintained a cautious Sunday driver pace.”

Collins’ Oldsmobile “skidded into the fence”.

Beauchamp was leading the I.M.C.A. points standings going into this event and was also leading the race at the mid-point when a strap broke that was holding his gas tank in place.  After quick repairs, Sonny Morgan took over Beauchamp’s car as relief driver and was gaining on Jepsen when the engine began to sputter.

South “piled up against the fence on the west side of the track” where his car sat for the remainder of the race.

Jepsen had a three-lap lead over second place Dake when his Oldsmobile blew a rear tire on the 159th lap.  Jepsen lost 2˝ laps getting the tire changed.  Dake mistakenly thought he was leading the race and did not try to challenge Jepsen until the last five laps of the race.  Jepsen’s margin of victory was the length of a straight-away.

* Darrell Dake went on to compete in the Daytona “500” twice.

** Johnny Beauchamp (1923-1981) went on to compete in the Daytona “500” in 1959.
