1950 Mercury

  1

The cars of Clark and South tangled and became locked together in the first turn.  The race continued and the leaders were nearly a lap ahead by the time the two cars were separated.  Both Clark and South set out in an attempt to overtake the field.  Clark did not finish in the top eight but South was able to catch and pass every car in the field except for McKim.  After the race, Lehman posted a $25 bond to have South’s car examined by officials to see that it conformed to the rules.  It was ruled that South’s Mercury was equipped with oversized pistons (.125 whereas .040 was the maximum allowed) and an aluminum flywheel so he was disqualified from every event he had participated in and forfeited all prize money won.  He was also required to pay the officials $25 for the inspection while Lehman’s bond was returned to him.

McKim collected $355.50 from the posted purse on this afternoon.

Bill Lehman’s 1950 Pontiac is shown here behind the grandstand after the races – Lehman collection

* The 1950 Ford that Massey drove on this afternoon was an everyday working taxicab owned by the McVay Taxi Cab Company of Hutchinson and the company's telephone number "86" was painted on the side of the cab so that is what served as the car number.

** Richard M. “Dick” Hendershot (1925-1976) was fatally injured in a racing accident at Salina, Kansas
