 Time Trials for the

Second Annual National Championship Jalopy Races

On the Historic Half-mile Racetrack at the

Kansas State Fairgrounds

 Hutchinson, Kansas

Saturday – July 26, 1958

Promotional Company – Merrick Racing Promotions (M.R.P.)

Race Director – Jack Merrick of Dodge City, Kansas

Trophy Queen – Joyce Dusbabek of Enid, Oklahoma

Only the fastest 100 from time trials got to compete in the races run the next day.

All cars were 1953 model and older automobiles

Time Trials – 1 Lap

Published reports say that 161 cars participated in time trials although that appears to be an unlikely claim

The cars listed above are listed in order by the times they turned in from time trials.  The numbers in the column titled “Old Car #” are the numbers that the cars arrived at the racetrack with.  After time trials, the cars were issued numbers on flypaper that corresponded with the position that each timed in and those are the numbers in the column titled “New Car #.  For instance, although Will Forrest was driving Lawrence Brooks’ number “8-ball” car, he used the #1 issued to him on flypaper after time trials.

Only the fastest 100 cars from time trials were guaranteed a starting spot in a heat race on Sunday.  Cars that timed in 101st through 115th were kept in reserve on Sunday.  If a car was not ready to race when their race came out onto the racetrack, one of the 15 cars in reserve took that starting spot.

This photo was taken during time trials on this date but the car on the racetrack has not been identified yet.  The light colored coupe on a trailer that is visible in the lower left hand corner of the photo was built in Cecil Maupin, Sr.’s shop in Dodge City, Kansas and was towed to races all over the state.  The car was then raffled off in Dodge City on August 16, 1958 with proceeds going to the Bronco Buster Boy’s Ranch at Dodge City.  Click your mouse on the photo to learn more about this jalopy – Todd White collection

1 Kenneth Ovid “K. O.” Christian (1914-1961) was fatally injured in a racing accident at Wichita, Kansas.

2 Richard M. “Dick” Hendershot (1925-1976) was fatally injured in a racing accident at Salina, Kansas.

3 One source says this driver was B. F. Watkins of Pretty Prairie, Kansas.

4 Glenn Lee Leasher (1937-1962) was fatally injured in a crash while attempting to set a new world land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

5 Clarence Cochran was not satisfied with how slow his little red coupe timed in so he took the car home while time trials were still going on Saturday afternoon, cut the engine and gas tank seals off, repainted the car with green water colors, returned it to the racetrack, and entered it in time trials again claiming this was a different car.

6 J. L. "Junior" Stillwell, owner of the #85 that was to be driven by Bernie Beydler, withdrew his entry.  Beydler then tried to purchase another car at the racetrack but the owner of that car wanted cash only and would not take a check.

7 Leon Spain and Walt McWhorter arrived at the racetrack with matching cars after the 5 p.m. and therefore too late to participate in time trials.  They were each allowed to take one lap on the clock although those times were deemed unofficial and they were not allowed to compete in the races the following day.
