Barringer’s car seemed to show more speed, function more smoothly, and handle easier than the other cars. Evans finished second over Norris after a see-saw battle between the two. The cars of Evans and Norris were even going into the last lap but Evans’ Frontenac found a burst of speed on the back stretch to pull away to a two second advantage at the finish.

* George Barringer had built the Barringer Special himself. He went on to compete in the Indianapolis “500” six times before being fatally injured in a racing accident at Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta, Georgia in 1946.
** These races at Hutchinson appear to have come early in the racing career of “Hotfoot” Evans. Over the next couple of years, he gave his hometown as being San Antonio, Texas; Harlingen, Texas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Wewoka, Oklahoma but nothing as far away as West Virginia. A check of 1930 census records indicates that he was probably George Evans (1895-?) who worked as a “helper in a garage” in Wewoka, Oklahoma.
*** According to a newspaper account that appeared on page 3 of the July 4, 1929 issue of the Hutchinson Herald, J. K. McFadden was involved in an altercation on the racetrack in the morning before these races were run that afternoon. McFadden took his car onto the racetrack for a tune-up at about the same time that F. O. Ceideberg took out one of his race horses. Ceideberg suggested that McFadden get his car off of the racetrack while McFadden suggested other things. Ceideberg soon reappeared with a shotgun whereupon McFadden promptly knocked him down. Ceideberg’s son picked up the shotgun and stood guard until his father could recover from the blow. The elder Ceideberg grabbed the shotgun from his son and promptly “dropped it heavily” over McFadden’s head. McFadden swore out complaints and both Ceidebergs were arrested. The elder Ceideberg was charged with assault with intent to kill while his son was charged with simple assault.
**** Henry F. “Wingey” Williams (1882-1941) drove racing cars from 1913 to 1931. He only had use of one arm as the other one was rendered permanently useless in an accident while he was working at a municipal pumping station in Childress, Texas back before he took up racing cars.
