Glasse held the lead for the eighteen laps before being passed by Gary Haas who then spun out in the southeast turn on the twenty-second lap.  Runyan then assumed the lead and held it until the end.

Bush was running third with two laps remaining when his car lost power.

Moore’s engine lost a soft plug, lost all of its water, and his car spun wildly down the front straightaway in its own water.

Peter’s car flipped in the southeast turn on the thirty-fifth lap.

Copeland led from the third lap on and his victory was worth $1,500 plus contingency prizes.

This photo was taken as the cars prepared to start the pace lap for the fifth heat race on this afternoon.  The car at left is believed to be the #86 driven by Troy Matchen of Oklahoma City.  The #21 OFIXCO car was owned by Lloyd K. Stephens of Tulsa and driven by Jerry Stone of Owasso, Oklahoma and the #1 was owned by Charlie Ochs of Liberal, Kansas and driven by Mike Peters of Wichita.  This was the first Hutchinson Nationals where the cars ran wings – Brian Carroll collection
