Phil Simmons is Big Winner at Jalopy Races

Phil Simmons was the big winner in the jalopy races at Oakley and WaKeeney Sunday afternoon and evening.  Simmons extended his record of having never been beaten in a jalopy feature since taking over the black ’33 Chevy of the late Don Lytle of McCook, Nebraska last summer.  But there were some uneasy moments last night at WaKeeney…

In the afternoon at Oakley, Simmons won the fast heat and also the A feature beating Dennis Scheetz of Oakley in a ’32 Ford.  Simmons was then asked to compete in the rail feature and came in second to David Ross of Dodge City who was driving a Hudson.

Eddie Whitney of Almena in his ’32 Ford placed second in his heat at Oakley and was fourth in the feature...

Good Turnout for Stock Car Races

Charlie Hiner

A good crowd watched Jaycees stock car races here Sunday.  There were 14 entries and a couple of noisy, but minor, wrecks.  One stock car went off the track and got stuck in mud.

Top money winners in jalopies were Doyle Mitchell, Osborne, car 34; and Phil Simmons, Norton, 4; and in rails, Charlie Hiner, Wichita, 43; and Dave Ross, Jetmore, 54.

Webmaster Notes:

Charlie Hiner’s car was owned by Pius Selenke of Wichita, Kansas.

Dave Ross and Doyle Mitchell owned the cars they were driving.

Phil Simmons drove a 6-cyllinder Chevrolet from Beaver City, Nebraska known as “The Little Jewel”.   Simmons eventually stretched his string of consecutive feature race victories in the “Little Jewel” Chevrolet to seventeen.
