Floyd Seago, Sr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma became involved in auto racing in 1926 after seeing Gus Schrader set the one-lap track record on the old Tulsa half-mile dirt track at 26.7 seconds in the Riverside Special big car, a mark that stood for quite some time.
He built midgets for Bud Hemphill and rebuilt Ervin Wolf’s Indy car in 1945 and 1946. Floyd worked with Carl Oliver on John-Zink-owned cars and repaired midgets for Tex West, Red Hodges, Tommy Vardeman, Buzz Barton and others.
Floyd joined the American Automobile Association (AAA) in 1946 and served as their official flagman in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Texas from 1946 until 1953. In addition to his duties with AAA, Floyd also flagged at local tracks in Dewey and Tulsa in Oklahoma from the 1940s through the 1960s adding the Garfield County Fairgrounds racetrack in Enid, Oklahoma to his busy schedule in the 1950s and 1960s. Floyd’s flags were custom made by his wife, Mittie, and he wore out two sets of flags each year.
Due to health reasons, Floyd retired from racing in 1972 but that did not diminish his love of the sport.
Floyd’s photo collection is being shared here by his family in honor of his memory and he passed his passion for the sport on to me.
