Turner's car lost a wheel. First place in this race paid $35 in prize money. |
During the late 1950s, there was a group of driver's wives who often sat together in the bleachers. These ladies kept amazingly good records of the racing programs of the western Kansas and northwestern Oklahoma races in which their husbands competed. Dot (Mrs. Nut) Cokeley and Donna (Mrs. Gene) Coffman, both of Liberal, Kansas, were two of the most faithful in their record keeping but some of the others in this loosely-knit group were Elsie (Mrs. Dutch) Davis, and Donna (Mrs. Ace) Noland both from Dodge City, Kansas and Jennie (Mrs. Scott) Talbert of Ulysses, Kansas. Without the attention they gave to compiling and preserving the records of these races and for the generosity of their families in sharing them, the history of the races at Ulysses (and at several other racetracks) would have been lost and this web site would not have been possible. The photo above was taken on this night in the bleachers at Ulysses as Zida (Mrs. Cliff) Schriner at left, assisted Donna Coffman with her diligent record keeping - Coffman collection
Donna Coffman's admission ticket to these races and the pit pass worn by Gene Coffman on this particular evening are displayed above - Coffman collection
* Floyd "Dutch" Davis scratched his car from all of the races this night when it lost oil pressure during warm-up laps.
** One source says that the driver of this car on this particular evening was Charlie Pitts of Hutchinson, Kansas.
