This very poor quality photograph was taken just after trophy queen Susan Reeves (at left) had presented trophy dash winner Gene Coffman (dressed in all white) with his trophy on this evening and given him a kiss. She then quickly took off for the bleacher thus becoming known as the "kiss-and-run trophy girl" - Coffman collection

Murphy and Stanley Trahern were fighting for the lead when they tangled in the final turn and Coffman slipped past before Trahern could recover. The accident caused Murphy to run off of the racetrack and over an embankment. |
