Frank Murphy

These two photos were published in the Wichita Beacon newspaper to publicize the second match race run on this evening at West Side Speedway.  The ten-lap affair was won by track announcer Larry Stanley after race promoter Frank Murphy was disqualified for cutting through the infield – Wichita Beacon photographs from the Vickey Cummings collection

*The cars driven by Durward Aloysius “D. A.” Clem and Eldon “Curly” Steerman were both front-wheel-drive machines.  Clem withdrew his car from the first match race as he did not think his drive chain would last for both the match race and the A feature.

Unless otherwise noted, all of the photos on this web page are from the book One Tough Circuit, Midget Racing in America’s Heartland by Bill Hill
