#C5 Wayland “Bud” Camden prepares to get into his car after stripping down to his long underwear during the “Underwear Derby” a.k.a. the “Striptease Race” that was run on this night at West Side Speedway. The Underwear Derby was a novelty race in which two cars first raced for two laps around the racetrack after which the drivers exited the cars, stripped down to long handle underwear, got back in their cars, raced for two more laps around the track, exited their cars, got completely dressed again, and then ran the final lap around the racetrack on foot. Bud Camden was declared the winner on this night after Emmett Taylor was disqualified – George Schaeffer photo from the Vickey Cummings collection

1 D. A. Clem set a new one-lap track record in time trials with a time of 12.29 seconds in his front-wheel-drive Menasco powered midget.
2 The Australian Pursuit started the fastest ten cars from time trials in single file with the cars that had turned in the fastest times starting toward the rear. .Any car that was passed by any other car was eliminated until the midget driven by Mike Applebee was the only car still running. One source states that Ted Parker was credited with second place in this race but that is probably incorrect.
3 Emmett Walter Taylor (1910 – 1963) is buried in the Wichita Park Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas.
