Almost all of these race results have been gleaned from newspaper articles which do not mention most of the drivers who participated in those races. Therefore, this table covers only a fraction of the total races that Petty competed in at the 35 different racetracks where he raced over his 35-year driving career.
Petty is found in early newspaper articles using the alias “Ray Smallwood”. Smallwood, himself, never actually drove a race car.
DNP = Did not place whereas DNF = Did not finish and DNS = Did not start.
Petty said that the car he drove this day was the most dangerous car he ever drove.
This was the last race ever won by a Ford flathead engine at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.
Although it is currently unknown how Petty placed in any of the races run on this date, he protested jalopy #73 driven by A feature winner Bob Peck and Petty had to be an entrant in those races to be allowed to do that.
Petty had been scheduled to drive a 283 c.i. Chevrolet sprint car #6 owed by Al Torson and Buddy Carroll of Wichita but that car suffered engine failure in time trials.
This race was sanctioned by the Big Car Racing Association (B.C.R.A.).
These races were stopped after the second fatal accident of the evening. Although no official victor was declared, Cotton Musick was leading at the time the races were stopped.
Sanctioned by the Auto Racing Association of Kansas (A.R.A.K.).
The headline in the Newton Kansan newspaper the next day read, “Petty Ran off with 5 Firsts and Then Ran off without His Prize Money”. His car had been protested but he did not tear it down so he was disqualified from every race had competed in that night except the trophy dash.
There was a story in a Liberal, Kansas newspaper saying that Petty’s car struck a hole in the racetrack in the 1st heat race of these races knocking the driveshaft loose striking Petty in the leg which caused a gash that required 16 stiches to close but that newspaper story was completely fabricated by some reporter.
