This event was originally to have been a challenge race between the automobiles and the motorcycles but the automobile owners declined the challenge so each automobile was given a chance to run by itself against the clock instead. Only two automobiles participated and only the time turned in by Kimball has been located to date, but his was the quickest time for the distance of any of either of the automobiles participating. Ray Weishaar then ran the same distance on his Indian motorcycle against the clock and turned in a time of 2:31.5 so he was presented with the purse for running the fastest 4-laps of the day.

Dr. Lemuel Blondel “L. B.” Kimball (1877-1941) was a Jeweler and an optician from Arkansas City, Kansas. He drove a Hudson-20 owned by Frank Brandenburg who was the fire chief of Arkansas City, Kansas. Dr. Kimball also ran a REO in trials but then drove Brandenburg’s Hudson-20 in the free-for-all race. Dr. Kimball’s fastest time in time trials and his victory in the free-for-all race won him a pair of “Thermos & Morocco bound case valued at $25.” The thermos bottles were placed on display in Winfield for a time before they were sent to car owner Brandenburg.
Dr. L. B. Kimball is buried beside his wife in the Sunset Lawns Cemetery at El Dorado, Kansas while Frank Brandenburg is buried in Hope Cemetery southwest of Arkansas City, Kansas.
