            Fondoble enjoyed early success in auto racing and was included in the 1936 edition of “Who’s Who in Automobile Racing”.

 

 

October 6, 1929 – 1 mile dirt oval – American Legion Racetrack at Oakley, Kansas

            Driver:  Loren Fondoble of Ellis, Kansas drove his own #77 Laurel Model T Ford special

            Finish:  Fondoble was 3rd fastest of the 8 cars entered in time trials behind Bill Epps of Oakley, Kansas and L. L. Neff of Winona, Kansas

                        Fondoble finished last in the 3-car, 5-lap 1st heat race in 4 minutes, 33 seconds and behind Rea Bray and L. L. Neff.

                        Fondoble did not finish the 2nd heat race that was won by Rea Bray.

                        Fondoble finished 3rd in 10 minutes, 18.0 seconds in the 5-car, 10-lap sweepstakes race behind Rea Bray and L. L. Neff.

Finish:  From the front page of the “Collyer Advance”, Collyer, Kansas, September 8, 1932:  “Loren Fondoble of Ogallah, was the victim of the second accident (of the day) and his car turned over when it struck soft dirt on the east corner of the track.  He was thrown out and escaped injury with only a few minor cuts and bruises, but the car was quite badly damaged.”

Finish:  Fondoble ran the 9th fastest lap in time trials of the 10 cars that ran a time trial.  His 1-lap time was 32.6.  His time was only slower than the times run by Ben Musick of Dallas, Texas a.k.a. “Bill Morris of Denver, Colorado”; Pietro Alberti a.k.a. Pete Alberts of Ybor City, Florida; Bob Wilson of Kansas City, Kansas who was driving his Gillette special; Win Fenstermaker of Minneapolis, Minnesota in his bright blue #27 car; Verne Franks of Chicago, Illinois; Karl Young of Chicago, Illinois; Art Challenger of Davenport, Iowa and Tommy Thompson of St. Louis, Missouri.

  Fondoble finished in 2nd place in the 5-lap consolation race behind Pietro Alberti a.k.a. Pete Alberts of Ybor City, Florida who was driving a bright red #6 race car.

September 17, 1934 – ˝ mile dirt oval – Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas – Sanctioned by I. M. C. A.

Driver & Car:  Loren Fondoble of Ogallah, Kansas drove his own #77 Vedol Model B Ford 4-port Riley special

Finish:  Fondoble received no time in the 16-car time trials.  The fastest time of the day was set by Sherman “Red” Campbell.

            Fondoble finished 5th in the 6-car, 10-lap Australian Pursuit behind Sherman “Red” Campbell, Pet Alberts of Ybor City, Florida; Rex Edmonds of Houston, Texas and Wes Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri.

            Fondoble finished 2nd in the 5-lap, 7-car consolation race behind Karl Young of Chicago, Illinois.

            Fondoble did not finish the 9-car, 10-lap Kansas State Sweepstakes race won by Sherman “Red” Campbell.  Fondoble experienced engine trouble in the race but was awarded the 7th place finishing position.

            Finish:  1,500 spectators saw Fondoble win the 6-car, 7-lap 2nd sweepstakes race for cars placing 7th through 12th in time trials in 12 minutes, 47.2 seconds.

            Fondoble finished 4th in the 15-lap Sweepstakes race in 4 minutes, 43 seconds behind “Tex West” a.k.a. Austin Wetzler, George “Joey” Chitwood of St. Joseph, Missouri and Augustus “Cotton” Grable of Houston, Texas.

August 17, 1935 – 1 mile dirt oval – Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia, Missouri – Sanctioned by I. M. C. A.

Finish:  The starting positions were determined by the time trials run on September 21, 1936.

             Fondoble finished 5th in the 9-lap, 8-car Australian Pursuit behind Lou Brown of Champaign, Illinois; Bill Musick of Lincoln, Nebraska; Pietro Alberti a.k.a. Pete Alberts of Ybor City, Florida and Tom Murie.

Fondoble finished 5th in the 7-car, 5-lap consolation race behind Pietro Alberti a.k.a. Pete Alberts of Ybor City, Florida; “Tex West” a.k.a. Austin Wetzler of Dallas, Texas; Oscar Coleman of Dallas, Texas and Waldo Barnett.

            Fondoble lost control of his Ford Riley special on the north turn in the 25-lap Invitational Handicap and crashed through the inside fence knocking down two sections.  He was not injured.  The race was won by Ed Graves.

Finish: 14,000 spectators saw Fondoble crash his car into the inside fence during time trials.  The fastest time was set by “Bill Morris” a.k.a. Ben Musick.

            Fondoble finished 3rd behind “Tex West” a.k.a. Austin Wetzler and Rae Bray of Hutchinson, Kansas in the 5-lap, 8-car consolation race.

Fondoble finished 3rd in the 5-lap 1st heat race for the fastest 6 cars in time trials.  He followed only “Bill Morris” a.k.a. Ben Musick and Lyn Musick, brothers from Dallas, Texas.

            Fondoble finished 4th in the 8-car, 10-lap feature behind “Bill Morris” a.k.a. Ben Musick, Lyn Musick, and Herb Manges of Tiffin, Ohio.

            Fondoble finished 2nd to Bob Sledge of Houston, Texas in the 8-lap semi-final race.

            Fondoble finished 2nd to “Bill Morris” a.k.a. Ben Musick in the 8-lap feature race.

September 24, 1938 – 1 mile dirt oval – Tennessee State Fairgrounds at Cumberland Park in Nashville, Tennessee – Sanctioned by I. M. C. A.

Attendance: “over 50,000”

Driver & Car:  Loren Fondoble of Wichita, Kansas drove his own #10 Model B Ford 4-port Riley.

Finish:  Only eight drivers were allowed to participate in time trials due to the poor condition of the racetrack.  It is unknown if Fondoble was one of those eight drivers.

 Fondoble finished 2nd in the 8-mile Australian Pursuit behind Ray Gardner of Long Beach, California who was driving a Miller special.

 Fondoble won the 5-mile Vanderbilt Derby over Red Bryant of Atlanta, Georgia who was driving a Miller special.  Fondoble was leading at the end of the first lap when Houston Penton (1909-1973) of Meridian, Mississippi lost control of his #16 Duesenberg special, crashed the machine through the outside rail on the southwest turn and overturned.  Penton was unconscious when he was pulled out from beneath the car.  He was taken to the hospital and admitted in critical condition with a broken arm and a fractured skull.

Feature race winner:  The feature race was canceled due to the poor condition of the racetrack.  Emory Collins of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada was declared the winner of that race since he had qualified for the event with the fastest lap run in time trials.

 

September 27, 1938 – ˝ mile dirt oval – Alabama State Fairgrounds at Birmingham, Alabama – Sanctioned by I. M. C. A.

Attendance: 5,000

Driver & Car:  Loren Fondoble of Wichita, Kansas drove his own #10 Model B Ford 4-port Riley.

Finish:  Fondoble finished 2nd in the 13-lap Australian pursuit behind Buddy Callaway of Miami, Florida who was driving the Luther special.

Feature race winner:  Emory Collins of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada who was driving his own Offenhauser #7.

Finish:  Fondoble finished 2nd in the 16-lap Australian Pursuit Invitational Handicap race behind Clyde Gilbert of Denver, Colorado.  Fondoble had held a large lead in this race at one point.

Finish: 12,000 fans saw Fondoble win $15 by finishing 3rd behind Ben Musick and Harry Robtoy of Pontiac, Michigan in the 7-lap 1st heat race.

September 15, 1940 – ˝ mile dirt oval – Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas – Sanctioned by I. M. C. A.

Finish:  8,000 spectators saw Fondoble tie with Clarence Merriett of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Claude Gorin of Wichita Falls, Texas for place 4th place behind Vic Rothe of Omaha, Nebraska; Shorty Burns of St. Louis, Missouri and Bob Vorbeck of Longmont, Colorado of the 20 cars that ran time trials.

            Fondoble dropped out of the 7-car, 8-lap 1st heat race with engine trouble.  The race was won by Vic Rothe of Omaha, Nebraska.

            Fondoble continued to be plagued by engine trouble in the consolation race and dropped out of this race won by Bill Harding of Douglas, Nebraska.

September 20, 1940 – ˝ mile dirt oval – Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas – Sanctioned by I. M. C. A.

Finish: Over 12,000 spectators saw Fondoble crash his car into the inside fence during time trials.  The fastest time was set by “Bill Morris” a.k.a. Ben Musick.

            Fondoble finished 2nd behind Rex Woodard of Hutchinson, Kansas in the 10-lap State Fair Handicap race.

            Fondoble blew a tire and spun out in a later race run on this afternoon but it has yet to be determined which race it was.

            Fondoble dropped out of the 1st 4-car, 5-lap heat race which was won by Harry West.

            Fondoble won the 2nd 4-car, 5-lap heat race in 2 minutes, 34.84 seconds.

            Fondoble finished 4th in the 10-car, 10-lap feature race behind Harry West, Harry Robtoy and Melvin “Slim” Rutherford.

            Fondoble finished 4th in the 8-car, 10-lap State Fair Championship race behind Emory Collins, Chuck Frame and Harry West.

            Fondoble was just barely beat out to finish 2nd behind Posey Reeves in the 2-car, 3-lap, Invitational Match Race behind Posey Reeves.

            Fondoble finished 4th in the 8-car, 5-lap Kansas State Sweepstakes race behind Emory Collins, Chuck Frame and Harry West.  Collins had run away with this race scheduled for 10-laps so the race was cut to 8-laps with muddy track conditions announced as being the reason.

Fondoble started in the 5th position in the 6-car, 7-lap 1st heat race for the 6 fastest cars in time trials and also finished in 5th place behind Jimmy Wilburn, J. B. “Chick” Smith; Phil Mocca and Don Smith.

Fondoble started outside of the front row in the 2-car, 5-lap consolation race and finished in 2nd place behind Phil Mocca but still collected $30 from the purse.

Fondoble finished 4th in the 4-car, Australian Pursuit behind Al Ketter, Bert McNeese of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Chuck Frame to collect $10 from the purse.

            Fondoble started on the pole of the 5-car, 9-lap, B feature and won the race in 4 minutes, 5.21 seconds to collect $80 from the purse.

June 1, 1947 – Newspaper ads, such as the one at right, touted Fondoble’s appearance in I.M.C.A. sanctioned big car races at both Huron, South Dakoda and Austin, Minnesota on this date but there is no evidence that Fondoble competed in the races either place on that date.

Finish: 18 cars appeared for time trials of which 14 actually took a timed lap.  Fondoble had the 10th fastest time of 29.54 seconds which was slower than the times burned in by Emory Collins, Deb Snyder, Billy Snyder, Wayne “Speed” Wynn of Tampa, Florida; Carl Scarborough; Bayliss Levrett, Joe Baker, Bill Anderson and Thurston Russell of Denver, Colorado.

            Fondoble started in the 3rd position and finished 2nd in the 3rd heat race behind Joe Baker.  That paid him $30 from the purse.

Fondoble started in the 8th position and finished 8th in the 10-car feature race behind Emory Collins, Deb Snyder, Carl Scarborough, Billy Snyder, Wayne “Speed” Wynn, Joe Baker and Bayliss Levrett.  In all, Fondoble collected $75 from the purse for his total finishes.

Finish:  13,000 to 14,000 spectators saw Fondoble tie with Ted Stubbe of St. Joseph, Missouri for 10th fastest of the 20 cars that took time trials at 29.83 seconds.  That was slower than the times turned in by Emory Collins, Deb Snyder, Elmer “Rabbit” Musick, Billy Snyder, Wally Stokes, William “Red” Hodges of Dallas, Texas; Bill Anderson, Harry King and Joe Baker.

            Fondoble won the 5-lap, 6-car 3rd heat race in 2 minutes, 32.72 seconds. That won Fondoble $30 from the purse.  With Swart’s car now qualified for the feature race, Swart took back the driver’s seat and Fondoble did not compete in any of the other races run that afternoon.

            Fondoble finished 3rd in the 5-lap championship dash behind George Bennie and Alfred “Speed” Funderburk to collect $20 from the purse.

            Fondoble won the 9-lap semi-feature sweepstakes race in 5 minutes, 19.24 seconds to collect $40 from the purse.

            Fondoble started in the 5th position and finished 5th in the 6-car, 5-lap 1st heat race for the fastest 6 qualifiers in time trials.  Fondoble finished this race behind Frank Luptow, Deb Snyder, Fred “Fritz” Tegtmeier and Al “Speed” Funderburk.

            Fondoble won the 5-lap, 2nd heat race to collect $35 from the purse.

            Fondoble started in the 4th position and finished 5th in the 9-car, 10-lap feature race behind Deb Snyder, Frank Luptow, Fred “Fritz” Tegtmeier and Alfred “Speed” Funderburk to collect $70 from the purse.

            Fondoble finished last in the 6-car, 7-lap 1st heat race behind Emory Collins, Ben Musick; Bill Hooper, Joe James and Robert Marr.

            Fondoble finished 3rd behind Roy Yauger of Austin, Minnesota and Owen Aleshire of Moberly, Missouri in the 7-car, 5-lap consolation race.

            Fondoble won the 3-car, 8-lap Australian Pursuit Handicap Race.

            Fondoble finished 8th in the 10-car, 10-lap feature race behind Emory Collins, Jimmy Wilburn, Bill Hooper, Bill Anderson, Bert Hellmueller, Roy Yauger and Owen Aleshire.

            After Fondoble retired from racing near the end of 1950, he began attending the weekly races at Cejay Stadium in Wichita, Kansas where he became a regular in the pits helping the younger mechanics and drivers setup their race cars.
