Petty lost a rear wheel off of his #93 car in the northwest turn. The errant wheel bounced over the fence and out onto the State Fair midway. Petty was able to recover his wheel and, miraculously, no injuries were reported.

Humphrey led the first 15 laps before sliding high in the northwest turn. That allowed Coleman to pass him on the inside. Humphrey battled back until he blew a tire in the southeast turn on lap 16 and dropped out of the race.
Copeland crashed his #8 car into the outside fence in the southwest turn.
