The first 8 finishers from the 5 heat races made up the first 40 qualifiers for this race.  5 more were scheduled to transfer from the Semi-Final but only 4 did.

Trahern’s engine “shelled out” on the 48th lap.

The accelerator peddle broke on Pitts car forcing him out of the race.

The battery fell out of Thomas’ car.

                Kreger’s car suffered engine failure.

Allen’s car crashed into the fence.

Will Forrest gave Lies a terrific battle for the front spot for the first 20 laps.  Forrest’s Hudson lost its transmission on the 41st lap and he had to drop out of the race.

Lies was the only driver to complete the full 75-lap distance having lapped every car in the field at least once.

Moore actually crossed the finish line in second place but was disqualified when he refused to tear his engine down for inspection.

Potts was disqualified for using a 12-volt battery.

Albright’s prize money was $300 for 1st place in the 5th heat race and 6th place in the feature.

Cokeley broke a front spindle, lost a wheel, and stopped next to the wall in front of the grandstands on the 71st lap.  His car remained there for the remainder of the race.

Sealock started 5th in the Semi-Final race and won it.  Next, he started 41st in the Championship race and finished in 3rd place.  Thus, he was able to pass 43 cars in 105 laps to win at total of $250 from the purse.

11th place through 14th places each received $10 from the purse but it is unknown who those four drivers were.

The Semi-Final Race Lined Up on the Racetrack

Right to left:  #43 Rolland Crocker of Salina, Kansas; #48 Marvin Smith of Hooker, Oklahoma; #50 Todd White of Hutchinson, Kansas; and #56 Bob Riner of Wichita; and #51 Dick Walker of Arkansas City, Kansas are the only cars in this photo to be identified to date.  White’s car normally carried the #43 but the flypaper #50 had been applied over that number since Todd had timed in 50th as the fiftieth fastest car in time trials.  Click your mouse on the photo above to see what that car looked like as #43.  The people seated at the table on the stage at far right were there to score the races – Todd White collection

This photo was taken in the first turn on the first lap of the third heat race.  No one was injured but the race had to be restarted for the second time.  The cars in this photo have yet to be identified – Hutchinson News photo

This photo shows #6 Frank Lies’ victory calibration on the racetrack in front of the grandstand after he won the 75-lap feature race on this day.  Lies’ car is mostly obscured by the people gathered around it.  The coupe most visible in this photo is the Maupin car that was being raffled off and is actually parked on a trailer just outside the racetrack fence and thus nearer the camera – Cokeley collection

This photo was taken after the completion of the 75-lap Championship race.  #19 was owned by Bud Hibler of Hooker, Oklahoma and driven by Nut Cokeley of Liberal, Kansas.  The car is shown here where it came to rest against the wall in front of the grandstand after the left front spindle broke on the 70th lap.  The car was left in this precarious position for the final five laps of the race – Cokeley collection

5 Numbers on flypaper issued to the cars after time trials and reflecting the position that they had timed in during time trials.

6 Only the fastest 100 cars from time trials were guarenteeded a starting place in a heat race.  The cars that timed in 101st through 115th were kept in reserve on the infield.  If any car could not start a race in its assigned position, one of the reserve cars was allowed to take its place.  Thus, Mr. Thornton was able to assume the place of #91 Gil Storey, Mr. Hoffman was able to assume the place of #92 Fritz Kuntzsch, and Mr. Harrod was able to assume the place of #99 Bill Bookout all in the Semi-Final and Mr. Reed, Jr. was able to assume the place of #68 Harold Portlock in the Championship Race.
