“Throughout the entire race, hot rods were sliding, skidding, and squeezing the curves on the dirt track-and the dirt flew.  Les Suter, Oakley, was crowded over the side of the southwest curve in one heat, forcing him to take to the pasture, a fence, ditch and the highway without turning over.” - Oakley Graphic – Friday, August 12, 1949 – Front Page

*Charlie Lutkie only raced at Oakley during the fair dates when the races were run on weekday afternoons.  He liked dry slick race tracks and he could always depend on the Oakley race track being dry slick.  He the competition was very tough at Oakley though.  In the evenings, Lutkie would participate in wrestling matches at the fair.  The racing promoter would pay the other drivers their winnings after the races but insisted on waiting until after he had watched Lutkie wrestle in the evenings before he would pay Lutkie his winnings.
