HOT ROD RACES

Sportsman Park – Oakley, Kansas

Sunday Afternoon – August 27, 1950

14 hot rods entered

This photo was taken from the grandstand at Sportsman Park in Oakley, Kansas and probably on this date.  The car closest to the camera is the blue #1 hot rod of Lloyd Walinder of Oberlin, Kansas.  The hot rod in front of the Jeep is the #22 owned by brothers Cloyd and Emmett Ricketts of Winona, Kansas and driven by Les Suter of Oakley.  The men standing beside the Ricketts Brothers’ hot rod are, left to right, owners Cloyd Ricketts, Emmett Ricketts, and mechanic Bob Bartell.

The light colored hot rod in the infield behind Cloyd Ricketts, appears to be the #7-11 owned by L. E. Pickrel of Scott City, Kansas.

The sign on the sideboard of the pickup truck in the background at left reads “Highway Motors” which was a business owned by the Harold Shaw of Grainfield, Kansas who also owned a #27 hot rod driven by Mickey McCormick – Mirl Barnett photo
