Bob McKim of Salina, Kansas is shown here in Ronald Rice’s Oldsmobile 88 after winning the 200-lap race at Belleville, Kansas. McKim had qualified the quickest in time trials and was therefore issued the number one for this race.
This photo of the new car race starting lineup at Belleville, Kansas in 1951 shows #1 Bob McKim in the pole position in Ronald Rice’s Oldsmobile 88. McKim completed the 200-lap distance on one pit stop in 102 minutes. The size of the crowd indicates how popular this form of auto racing was at the time. Some of the other drivers known to have started in this 15-car field are: LaVerne Long of Linn, Kansas; Bob Bandy of Liberty, Missouri; and John “Chug” Montgomery from Lebanon, Missouri. If you recognize any of the other car or men in this photograph, please contact Bob Lawrence.
