Shaw received very serious injuries when he rolled his car several times on the backstretch.  He was not conscious when he was admitted to St. Joseph Memorial hospital in Larned in extremely critically condition with a fractured skull.

Nicholson spun his car out on both first and eighth laps but the race continued both times as Nicholson was able to get his car pointed in the right direction and rejoined the fray.
